Unfolding the Map

Exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand

Unfolding the Map is an exhibition and public programme that examines the changing face of cartography in New Zealand and the Pacific.

Fortyfive Design’s role was to design the exhibition and manage the branding, production and installation. This required working closely with the curator and programmes team to ensure the exhibition functioned successfully in engaging with a very broad public audience.

The overall intent of the exhibition was to present New Zealand cartography in a chronological fashion with a corresponding timeline to mark both social and important cartographic events. The exhibition aimed to represent maps from the past and present and give a possible vision of the future of cartography. The exhibition design reflected this by dividing the main outer walls of the gallery into three key sections. A historical section, a contemporary section and a digital/future facing section.
